What If I Get Too High?

One of the questions I had when I first started consuming was, “What if this goes wrong? What if I try the wrong strain or the edibles are more potent than I thought? What If I get too high?” There are a ton of myths out there about what to do if you get too high. In this blog article we will explore various solutions if you feel as though you have overindulged.

First things first, what does getting too high feel like?

Getting too high can feel like being too drunk. The exact effect will depend on the strain that you consumed and the method of consumption (smoking, edibles, etc.). It’s easiest to overindulge when consuming edibles because it takes so long to feel the effects - that’s why we recommend that beginners take the smallest dose possible when trying edibles for the first time. You are likely to feel more out of control than you’d prefer, laugh so hard you can’t stop crying, or feel overly paranoid.

It’s me, what do I do?!

Take a deep breath. And put yourself to bed.

So you feel a little more intense than initially expected? Breathe in. Breath out. All you need is a little bit of rest and relaxation. This feeling will soon fade to a deep calmness and you may even begin to feel a little bit drowsy. Close your eyes. Trust me, this may just be the best nap of your life!

CBD to the rescue

CBD is the sister to THC but it doesn’t get you high. CBD, or cannabidiol (pronounced: can·ah·bid·dial), is a plant compound found in many nutritious plants including broccoli, black pepper, ginseng, carrots, and echinacea. It is also one of the most abundant compounds in the cannabis plant. The chemical compounds in CBD can neutralize the THC in your system and reduce your high sensation. CBD is legal in the United States so you can pick up CBD creams, oils, edibles, and patches online.

I actually will consume CBD if I feel like I’m not quite in as much control as I would like and that has been a game changer for me!

Eat Food

Most stereotypical cannabis users are depicted with red eyes, a joint in one hand, and a bag of Doritos in the other. Where I can admit to experiencing a cannabis induced increase in appetite also known as “the munchies”, there is no evidence that the only cure is a high carb, high fat solution. Although there is absolutely no shame in reaching for that bag of chips, if you are feeling a little more impact than you originally anticipated, I recommend filling your belly with something nearby and easy to make! This may help you come back to a more neutral state.

Hydrate

Staying hydrated is always a good idea. Many people report feeling dry mouth after using cannabis so we recommend always keeping water nearby!

Peppercorns

No, I am not joking! There are several reports that say you can chew on peppercorns if you are feeling more intense than you would like. Cannabis icon Willie Nelson raves about this approach! Apparently, some of the chemical make up of pepper actually reduces some of the impact of THC.
